A Dozen Medals for Team Colorado

Eight juniors attended the 2006 33rd US Junior Olympic Racquetball Championships, representing Team Colorado. Five of the eight medaled for a final count of twelve total medals with six division national champions.

First time national tournament entrants Tim Smith and Bryce Johnston had a good first showing and learned the value of practice. In his second national tournament Kevin Hernandez played well in the second toughest division, boys 16 & under singles. His game was much improved over last year and so was the competition.

  • Erika Manilla - National champion (2 divisions) in girls 8 & under multi-bounce and girls 8 & under single bounce.
  • Elizabeth Vargas - National champion in the girls 10 & under doubles, third in the nation in the girls 10 & under singles, and won the consolations with Matt McAdam in the mixed 10 doubles.
  • Matt McAdam - Third in the blue division boys 10 singles, and first in the consolations of the mixed 10 doubles.
  • Zack Pellowski - Second in the blue division boys 10 singles, and second in the gold division of the boys 10 doubles.
  • Adam Manilla - National champion in three divisions: Boys 10 singles, boys 10 doubles, and mixed 10 doubles.

Bravo Vargas!
They found it ... The CRA received a nice email from Alex and Alejandra Vargas, explaining that they had found tons of money in their souvenir package. As reported, the funds raised for Junior Team Colorado had mistakenly been "issued" with one of the tournament souvenirs.

The Vargas's were kind enough to follow-up after discovering the cash, and the CRA accepted the hand-off from Isaac and Alex Vargas (pictured L-R). Kudo's to the Vargas family for finding the funds and going the extra mile to get it back to the CRA in plenty time for Junior Nationals!

Junior Support

Local juniors who travel to national events to compete on behalf of Junior Team Colorado receive a number of benefits underwritten by the CRA. If you'd like to help with the purchase of team jackets, uniforms and travel stipends, please contact Dan Davis or Marcia Richards  to arrange a donation (either cash or in-kind). A number of scholarships are also awarded by the CRA, which is always looking for ways to increase the funding in those budget accounts.

Boosters Needed ... Although Junior Team USA is scheduled to compete at the IRF World Junior Championships in December, but there are no USRA budget funds available to send the qualified players. Team head coach Kelley Beane (N.H.) has set up a USA Junior Team Booster account to process tax-deductible donations to the cause, and she is seeking help from individuals, parents, well-wishers and state associations nationwide. If you'd like to donate, contact her at KBeane6@aol.com, or send your check to: USA Junior Team Boosters, 91 Lancaster Avenue, Manchester, NH 03103.
